Mordi Coaching Regatta 28th-29th August 2010

On the 28th and 29th of August 2010 the Mordialloc Sailing Club will be running the “Mordi Regatta”. This regatta is a coaching regatta which means it is specifically set up to support the coaching of the different classes involved.

This year we will be running specific sessions for Firebugs during the weekend.  On the Saturday we will be discussing rigging and sailing from 10am with racing starting at mid-day. On the Sunday we will be discussing building from 8:30am with racing at 10am.

If you want to be involved in the racing then you need to read the “Notice of Race” on the Mordialloc Sailing Club site. Look for the section labelled “Sail Mordi Coaching Regatta”. Specifically you need to be aware of the need to carry insurance.

If you want to come along but don’t want to race then you are most welcome to just sail socially, join in with the sessions and stay around for a drink and chat afterwards.

Don’t have a Firebug? Interested in building yourself? Are you part way through building and want to see a finished one? What ever the reason come along to join in the sessions and be part of the weekend.

Firebug Launch

The Firebug launch was a great success if only because we had all seven boats finished and lined up on the beach for our launch at the Mordialloc Sailing Club.

Unfortunately the weather did not play its part and blew so hard that all boats stayed on the beach, including the racing boats from the club. Notwithstanding that it was great to see the boats with their excited builders, families and friends. A number of other bug builders turned up to witness the launch, hopefully their day is coming soon.

Before the official launch two of the boats were involved in sail training in the morning when the wind was lighter. The boys had a great time in their new boats.

Firebug Official Launch

On the 6th of February 2010 we will be officially launching the seven Firebugs that we have building as part of our first boat building program. All the builders are working frantically to make sure everything is ready for the big day.

The launch will take place at the Mordialloc Sailing Club at 11:30am on the 6th of February and this is an open invitation for friends and family to come along to see all the hard work put in by the people involved in building the boats. Also welcome are any other Firebug owners that would like to bring their boats along for a sail or just show up to see the new boats.

I have spoken to Peter Tait from Firebug HQ in New Zealand and he is keen to attend the launch as well. Hopefully he can make it as this will be a great addition to what is going to be a great day.

After the launch and a bit of a sail we will be starting up the BBQ and having lunch at the club. Watch this space as we will provide further details about this closer to the date.

Building the Firebug - Part 9

We kind of got ahead of ourselves and ended up with Part 10 but no Part 9, so here it is.

Firebug Build Part 10 - Planking

In this video we plank the boat and turn her over.

We are full!

We have now filled our boat building program starting on the 11th of October 2009. We have six very excited groups getting ready to start their boats and as we move alone we will follow their progress on the site as well as continue on our video series.

If you were thinking about joining this program but the timing was just not right for you this time then you will be happy to know that we are planning a second build program for some time in the new year. If you think you would like to be part of this then send me an email at richard.lozell@getintosailing.com and I will keep you informed of our plans.

Building the Firebug Part 8 - Finishing the Rudder Stock

In this video we finish off the rudder stock that we started earlier in the series. This is one of those jobs you can get on with while you are waiting on glue to dry on your boat.

The launch of Mum's Boat

Just a few weeks to go until the start of our boat building program.

On Sunday October the 11th we start our boat building program with the support of the Mordialloc Sailing Club.

Join us to build your very own boat that will be ready in early December. Just in time for Christmas!

The build program will put seven new boats on the water and at this stage we have four places left so get in quick!

Once completed the boats will be launched at a special ceremony at the Mordialloc Sailing Club where you will be able to sail your boat on a regular basis.

The program will be based in Frankston and run every Sundaybetween 12:30pm and 4:30pm for nine weeks.

Check out our Boat Building page for more information.

Building the Firebug Part 7 - Assembling the Bulkheads, Girders and Gunnels

In this video we start to put some of the parts together and suddenly we have something that looks like a boat!

Building the Firebug Part 6 - Assembly of the Girders and Centercase

After spending a little time making parts we now get to start putting things together. In this video we will assemble the girders and the centercase which form the backbone of the boat.
